There is much speculation around whether or not we need to drain swimming pools to keep them blue and sparkling clean. Many people say that if you have the correct filtration and PH balance there is little or no need to drain your pool. Another opinion is that pools should be drained on average every two or three years. But there are a couple of factors that you should take into consideration before you make the final decision.
Something you have probably never considered is the type of water in your pool. Hard water contains a large number of dissolved minerals including those such as chalk and lime. These can cause an excess build up on the walls and floor of your swimming pool and this may lead to a greater need to drain swimming pools.
Soft water is treated water, and contains sodium only, and will be much gentler on the sides and bottom of your swimming pool. If you are unsure of the type of water you have, chat to a professional about water testing.
Some of the other things to take into consideration when deciding whether or not to drain swimming pools are the cleaning and chemical balance of your pool. Make sure you test the water regularly and maintain the correct PH balance – this will prevent algae and harmful bacteria from growing in your pool. Make sure your filter and vacuum system are both working correctly as this will also assist in keeping the pool clean.
Another factor that may lead to a need to drain swimming pools is closing up a pool for winter. If you are going to cover your pool, make sure the water is in good condition before you cover it. This will make it easier to restore when you uncover it again come swimming season.
